Member Spotlight: Marshall Ann Bourgeois, an elderly woman in yellow, sits at a table with a framed photo and kitchen cabinets behind her.

As the longest-standing member of First Presbyterian Church (received in 1938 through Confirmation), we thought it’d be fun to have a chat with Marshall Ann Bourgeois.

What is your earliest memory of the church grounds?
Growing up, the senior pastor was Dr. Christian. He and his wife lived in the church manse which was at the corner of Convention St. and 8th Street. It was white and had a front porch swing. Dr. Christian’s wife started a chapter of Campfire Girls that met at the church.

What is your favorite memory of a church celebration?
Why, my wedding, of course! (1951). Although, oftentimes Nelson and I wondered if we were truly married. Dr. John Melton was on vacation so we had an interesting substitute preacher who looked to be about 20 years old!

What traditions have changed over the years?
Deacon board members stayed until retirement.

What was Sunday school like?
I loved being taught Bible stories by my teacher!
