Mike and Stephanie reside in Beirut, Lebanon. Mike teaches at the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary. ABTS welcomes students from all over the Arab world. Currently he is engaged in doctoral studies on two theologians of the Church of the East and how their theology interfaced with Islamic thought. Stephanie is involved with the seminary as well and works in educational projects with Syrian refugees. They are affiliated with World Outreach of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Mike is an ordained Teaching Elder of the EPC and was guest speaker for our 2012 Global Missions Conference at First Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge.
Mike grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, raised by Christian parents and grandmother. He met his wife Stephanie (from Charlotte, NC) at Montreat College. Shortly after marriage, they left the United States as missionaries with Arab World Ministries. The main thrust of their ministry for 22 years in the Middle East was discipling former Muslims who have embraced the gospel. The Kuhns also worked with a large Evangelical Church in Cairo to develop a training program for cross-cultural workers.
Persistent attempts to enter into the culture of the Middle East have provided them with empathy for Middle Easterners of all religious backgrounds. Mike authored a book in 2007 titled Fresh Vision for the Muslim World (Intervarsity Press). Their hope is that Christians in the West will avoid a mindset of enmity towards Muslims and embrace the different vision that Jesus Christ modeled for religious and cultural enemies through his interaction with Samaritans.
