What was it like to be a Protestant in early Baton Rouge 40 years prior to the founding of First Presbyterian Church?
In 1763, Spain took control of Louisiana from France. Although the majority of Louisiana’s Christian settlers were Catholics, Protestants who had been previously worshipping under French rule were allowed to continue to worship in their own way provided no more than eight were in attendance. However, all children of Protestants were required to be baptized by a Roman Catholic priest and reared in the Catholic faith. Protestant ministers were not allowed to preach, baptize, perform marriage ceremonies or funeral rites. A lot would change between 1785 and 1827 when FPC was founded.
